Responsive Confession and Prayer of Repentance

Pastor: Holy and Loving God, Maker and Sustainer of all life, through your Word and through your son, Jesus Christ you have called us to “love you with all our heart, all our soul, all our mind and all our strength.”

People: Forgive us for holding back on our love and devotion to You.

Pastor: Your word teaches us that our time, our resources, our gifts and our very lives belong to You, yet we have not always used them for your purposes and your glory.

People: Forgive us for giving ourselves to idols and idolatrous desires in heart, soul, mind, and body.

Pastor: You word clearly tells us, that the idols of this world are gods with no ears, with no mouths, with no hands and feet, with no hearts, and with no life at all.

People: Forgive us for seeking life where life cannot be found; for seeking answers where there are none.

Pastor: Your Word has clearly called us as your children, to flee idols and to resist the devil and his temptations.

People: Forgive our foolishness in seeking other loves and our weakness to resist the devil because of our selfish desires.

Pastor: We have fallen prey to the world, the flesh and the devil. We often seek the wealth and approval of the world, the pleasures of the flesh, and the deceitfulness of power that the devil offers.

People: Forgive our foolishness in seeking other loves and set us free from the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Pastor: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, left alone we are powerless to change our hearts, our minds, and our actions; but through the power of the risen Christ and the presence of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we offer ourselves wholly to you.

People: Be the one and only love of our hearts today and every day.

Pastor: Be the one and only longing of our soul today and every day.

People: Be the one and only love of our thoughts today and every day.

Pastor: Be the one and only love that motivates all our actions today and every day.

People: By the power of the risen Christ and the Holy Spirit, we will love you with all our being.

Pastor: In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit we pray

 People: Amen.

I am dependent.  Dependent on You, dependent on others, dependent on creation.

Even the IRS knows about “dependents.”  Those people who cannot or do not live on their own, those people who need help with a place to live, food to eat, provisions for life which they cannot secure for themselves.  There are many dependents, we are all dependents. I am a dependent.  I am dependent on You, O Lord.

I cannot live on my own. I cannot provide for all I need.  I cannot anticipate all that might come my way.

I cannot resist temptations. I cannot love as I ought. I cannot always behave rightly and not behave badly.

I cannot control everything.  I cannot control emotions. I cannot control myself.

I cannot save myself. I cannot change my ways alone. I cannot live like You.

In the midst of all “I cannot,” I am forced to recognize what has always been true of humanity since Adam and Eve, what we seem unable or unwilling to admit and embrace.

I am dependent O Lord!  I am dependent on You, dependent on others, and dependent on your graciousness in creation.

Lord Jesus, provide for all who are dependent on You. Amen.

Gethsemane’s other prayers – Mark 14:32-42

Am I not among those who have walked with you all this time Lord?  There’s a faithful group of us, we’ve been serving, working, ministering, learning, preparing; you name it, we’ve been doing it.  All for you, Lord.  Right everyone?

“Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (And all God’s People said, “Amen and Amen!”)

“Sit here while I pray; stay here and keep watch.”

Oh Lord, we’ve been working so hard all day; pushing for the kingdom, serving with great joy…but I am so tired. Dear God, bless the children, and the families, and the work of the church, and the pastors, and everyone else I am too tired to remember.

“Are you asleep?  Could you not watch for one hour?  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation”

Oh Lord, yes I am willing. I will fight with you, I will fight for you, I will stand with you to the end.  Don’t worry about me and temptation, I’ve been following pretty close now for a while Jesus. It’s all good…

Except, my eyes seem to fail me, the body is weak.  I need rest Lord. I’ve been working so hard, serving, preaching, going to meetings, feeding hundreds, setting up dinners and programs and studies and prayer times and… I am so tired. If I could just get a power nap for a few minutes, I would be good and back to service again.  Bless the children, and the families, and the work of the church, and the pas…

“Are you still sleeping and resting?  Enough! The hour has come…”

Have mercy O God, the spirit is willing, but my body is so weak.  “I don’t understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”  Have mercy O God!  Have mercy on me.  Have mercy on us all.

“Times of Testing” – Prayers on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday from Reflections on Matthew 3:16-4:11

O God, how I long for moments like these:

Moments when heaven opens up.

Moments when the Spirit descends like a dove.

Moments when I clearly hear Your voice of affirmation, “You are my child, whom I love, in whom I am well pleased”

O God, thank you for moments like these.  How I would love to stay in the warmth of its rays.

O God, how I dread and flee from moments like these:

Moments when the Spirit leads to the desert.

Moments of tempting and testing.

Moments of hunger and thirst; of emptiness of all but Your resource alone.

O Christ, strengthen and support me in moments like these.  Sustain me in my weakness that I may stand with you through the testings and temptings.  Send the devil away defeated and may your angels attend me in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“Be our Rock”

Heavenly Father and Almighty God, we turn to you in the midst of our personal need and the great need of the world today.

Pay attention to us O Lord. Come quickly to help us.

Pay attention to our need for help in the midst of busy lives.

Pay attention to our need for health and strength in mind, body and spirit.

Pay attention to our need for deliverance from addictions, from discouragement, from troubling circumstances and tough situations

Pay attention to our need for forgiveness.

Pay attention to our prayers for others, close and far away,

For those who are hungry today

For those who are in slavery, in places of war, in abusive and hurtful places.

For those who need your deliverance

For those who need new life and hope in the midst of despair.

Come quickly to help, O Lord

Be the Rock that we go to for safety.  Be the strong fort that saves us.

From our laziness, from our busyness, from our abundance and our lack.

From our sin and its ill effects on those around us and from the results of others sin in our lives.

From temptations, from weather, from emotional distress and depression.

From all things which distract us from your love and your purposes for our lives.

Be our Rock O Lord.  And indeed you are our Rock and Our Fort.

Lead us this day and guide our way,

That we might walk truly in your way,

And so bring honor to your name.

In the strong name of Christ our Lord we pray.  Amen.
