Prayer of Samson (Judges 16)

I shall get what I want by playing the game; I shall get what I want for I am strong.

I grow weary of the game, but I shall get what I want. I want and I shall satisfy.

I am tired to death, the game is over, I have lost the heart for it, I’ll tell her my truth.

“I will go out as in others times and set myself free!”  I am strong! I shall be free!

BUT, I did not know that the LORD had LEFT me!

Why should I have discerned such a thing, have I ever been aware of Your presence Lord?  I have been doing and working and playing and fighting and winning with the strength of my might.  Yet, now I lament as I feel the gouge, the pain, and the limits of my might and my strength. I am alone; the sport of the woman and the men who surround me. I am weak and lost and all alone.

“Lord God, remember me and strengthen me this once more…I am man, not mighty, not god…Come back for I can only find strength and help in the One from who all might is to be found. So remember me and strengthen me this once more O Lord.” Hear my prayer.

“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Confession and Longing after God – (Psalm 139 and 1 John 2:15-17)

Our Father in Heaven, Creator and Sustainer of all that you have made, Savior and Redeemer of our lives; as we have gathered for worship today we have affirmed our joy in your presence and your salvation. We have been reminded through the Psalm (139), that we can go nowhere in which we are not in your presence, we can never take in all that you are and how great your thoughts and your mercies toward us, and we can always trust in you as Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of our lives. For all of this we give you thanks and pray that our gratitude would grow and show in the way we live our lives every day.

And yet Father, we are challenged by your Word that calls upon us, “Do not love the world or anything in the world…”   We confess this morning, that each and every one of us have not loved you perfectly. We look around and see things in this world that we want. We have craved worldly and sinful things. We have lusted after things that appeal to our eyes. We have boasted about our own abilities and centered our lives upon ourselves in pride. We pray that you will lead us again to the truth, that the world and its desires pass away; that only those who do your will find life and life eternal.

So this morning Father, whatever has caught our eyes, whatever has captured our attention, whatever has led us away from you, we confess our shortcomings and sin, and pray that you will recreate us anew, that you will save us and redeem us from our sin, in thought and in deed, and empower us to live lives that are holy and pure, lives that conform to your will, through the power of Jesus Christ in his resurrection.   Lead us, transform us, and empower us to live a new life in Christ. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

“Be our Rock”

Heavenly Father and Almighty God, we turn to you in the midst of our personal need and the great need of the world today.

Pay attention to us O Lord. Come quickly to help us.

Pay attention to our need for help in the midst of busy lives.

Pay attention to our need for health and strength in mind, body and spirit.

Pay attention to our need for deliverance from addictions, from discouragement, from troubling circumstances and tough situations

Pay attention to our need for forgiveness.

Pay attention to our prayers for others, close and far away,

For those who are hungry today

For those who are in slavery, in places of war, in abusive and hurtful places.

For those who need your deliverance

For those who need new life and hope in the midst of despair.

Come quickly to help, O Lord

Be the Rock that we go to for safety.  Be the strong fort that saves us.

From our laziness, from our busyness, from our abundance and our lack.

From our sin and its ill effects on those around us and from the results of others sin in our lives.

From temptations, from weather, from emotional distress and depression.

From all things which distract us from your love and your purposes for our lives.

Be our Rock O Lord.  And indeed you are our Rock and Our Fort.

Lead us this day and guide our way,

That we might walk truly in your way,

And so bring honor to your name.

In the strong name of Christ our Lord we pray.  Amen.

I used to think…

I used to think I was quite capable, able to succeed at anything I set out to accomplish;

now, I often wonder if I am capable of anything that matters.

I used to think I was a servant; now, I often wonder if I simply serve my own interests and desires.

I used to think I was free; now, I often contemplate all the binds me.

I used to think I had many answers; now, I often marvel at the number of questions.

I used to think was strong; now, I often feel weak.

I used to think I was holy and just; now, I am often confronted with my sin and failures.

I used to think I trusted in God perfectly;

now, I see how often I act in fear and betray my unbelief.

I used to think that I was mature; now, I simply wonder if I will ever grow up.

I used to think that God is loving and present and active in His world; this I still believe. I pray that I might hold to Him and join Him in His creative, sustaining, loving action in the world.

Lord, hear my prayer.  Lord, have mercy!

A Communal Prayer of Confession

SILENT PRAYERS: Prayers of the People

RESPONSIVE PRAYER OF CONFESSION:  Pastors

Pastor/Leader:    Lord Jesus, in the silence you have brought to our minds and hearts our actions and words that have hurt, discouraged and impacted the lives of others.  Give us courage to take the prompting of your Holy Spirit seriously today and to take action to confess and seek reconciliation with those whom you have directed us to.

PEOPLE:  We come to you, our Savior, to confess our sin and seek your peace.

Pastor:    We have sinned, Lord.  We have wounded You by our actions, our thoughts, and our failures to act according to Your will. We have given into the flesh, the world, and the devil.

PEOPLE:  We come to you, our Savior, to confess our sin and seek your peace.

Pastor:    Our sins are many, our weaknesses inevitable.  We have broken your commandments.  We have not worshipped, as we ought.  We have not listened to Your Word.  We have denied you when confronted with our society’s norms of behavior.  We have ignored you, O God.

PEOPLE:  We come to you, our Savior, to confess our sin and seek your peace.

Pastor:   We have acted spitefully to friends and strangers.  We have fought with our family.  We have been impatient with those less capable than ourselves.  We have sought to be over others at work, school, home, and church.  We have spoken evil of others.

PEOPLE:  We come to you, our Savior, to confess our sin and seek your peace.

Pastor:    We have neglected charitable work.  We have neglected the hungry, the sick, the poor, the abused child, the imprisoned.  We have not hugged the sorrowing and the lonely.  We have not gone out of our way for those in need.  We have not forgiven those who hurt us.  We have not loved as You have called us to.

PEOPLE:  We come to you, our Savior, to confess our sin and seek your peace.

SILENT REFLECTION: Prayers of the People

THE LORD’S PRAYER:  Unison

BENEDICTION:  “Go in the peace, the love, and the forgiveness of God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Change my heart, O God

God of Grace and God of Greatness, You bless us this morning with Your presence.  We are humbled as we consider our place before You.  God of Love and God of Mercy, You bless us this morning with Your Presence.   We are thankful as we consider how You have lavished us with your everlasting love.  Thank You Father, Thank You Jesus, Thank You Holy Spirit.

Change.  Lord that is a word we do not like.  Change.  It brings out our deepest fears, plays on our insecurities, leaves us nothing to fall back on but You.  And perhaps that is why life never stays the same, that it is constantly changing; so that we might learn in simple faith to fall in your arms of love and power.

And so we pray this day O Lord, as your people.

Change us. Change our hearts.

Change our fear into faith, our weakness into strength.

Change our sinfulness to faithfulness, our despair into hope.

Change our pride to humility, our loss to gain.

Change our desires that we may desire only You.

Change our minds where we have thought wrongly.

Change our actions, where we have behaved wrongly toward You and toward others.

            Change our hearts, where we have labored to hold on to grudges, bitterness, and anger;

Change our hearts to forgive as you have forgiven, to love as your have loved us.

Change our cowardice to boldness in our witness to You.

Change our priorities, to care about that which you care about: people, lives, love.

Change our worship, that we may honor You more than pleasing ourselves.

Change us.  Yet not just us O Lord. Change our church, change Your church!  Change our nation, our leaders, those who influence our society. Change the world, bring peace where there is war; help where there are needy, good where there is evil, love where there is hate.

Change our hearts O God.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen
