“Times of Testing” – Prayers on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday from Reflections on Matthew 3:16-4:11

O God, how I long for moments like these:

Moments when heaven opens up.

Moments when the Spirit descends like a dove.

Moments when I clearly hear Your voice of affirmation, “You are my child, whom I love, in whom I am well pleased”

O God, thank you for moments like these.  How I would love to stay in the warmth of its rays.

O God, how I dread and flee from moments like these:

Moments when the Spirit leads to the desert.

Moments of tempting and testing.

Moments of hunger and thirst; of emptiness of all but Your resource alone.

O Christ, strengthen and support me in moments like these.  Sustain me in my weakness that I may stand with you through the testings and temptings.  Send the devil away defeated and may your angels attend me in the power of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

Confessions from An Affirmation that “This is My Father’s World”

Our Father, Creator and Maker of All Things, Sustainer and Lover of our Souls, we give thanks to you this day for the world that you have created and for your faithful love and mercy toward us.

Forgive us Lord, for although, this is your world, sometimes we are so obsessed with ourselves, our gifts and abilities, or our struggles and problems that we fail to discern and recognize this is our Father’s world.

Forgive us Lord, that though all nature sings, we often are silent in giving you the praises that are due to you.

Forgive us Father, for although, you speak to us everywhere, in all of life and all of creation, we often are distracted by the attractions of the world, the flesh and the devil, and we often are more concerned with what we have to say, than we are what you are saying to us.

Forgive us Father, that is the midst of the wrong that seems so strong in our world, we forget that You are the Ruler yet and that Christ is victorious in all things.

We sing “This is My Father’s World”.  Lift our eyes O Lord, to see beyond ourselves, beyond our boundaries of our community, our nation, our race, our perspective, so that we may see the needs of all peoples.  Grow our faith that we might trust that you have the whole world in your hands and that we might actively love and care for the world, even as you do.

Where there famine, bring food, immediate food and long-term solutions to hunger needs.

Where there is oppression, bring freedom and release.

Where there is war, bring peace, bring hope, bring peace-makers.

Where there is sorrow, bring comfort.

Where there are differences, teach us to love as you love the whole world.

We pray these things in name of our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Amen.

Prayers for rest in body, mind and heart

Everlasting and Almighty God, hear our prayers this day and grant us the rest that comes only from your Loving Presence

Heavenly Father, grant us rest for our troubled minds.   We have many unanswered questions in our minds.  Our minds race, speeding from one anxious thought to another, as the world is not as we want it to be or as we imagined it would be.  News reports of war, of natural disasters, of evil doers and of tragedy cause us to worry.   So Father, we come to you with all that stirs within our minds, trusting in Your loving mercies and provision. Grant us rest for our minds

Jesus, Messiah, grant us rest for our weary bodies.  The worries of our mind cause physical tiredness.  Our physical labors cause exhaustion; our illnesses weaken our bodies and make us further vulnerable to yet other illnesses.  We see it in ourselves, in those whom we love, both near and far.   It seems like each day, there is news of another loved one or acquaintance with something wrong, some disease, something to wear out the body.   So Jesus, You who suffered physical affliction and choose to enter our physical world of pain, we come to you with all our afflictions, the physical weariness and sufferings of both our friends and family, and ourselves.  Hear our prayer and grant to all we pray for this day rest for our bodies.

O Holy Spirit, grant us rest for our longing hearts.   The circumstances of our lives and the troubles of this world often leave us with a deep longing for something more.   Though we have much to cause us to give thanks, yet there remains an unsettledness in our hearts, that all is not yet as it should be.   Many times we turn to you when our hearts are lonely and stirring within, but sometimes we look to other things to distract us and bring us comfort.  Forgive us, Holy Comforter, and help us to trust in you and find a peace that passes understanding.   Grant us rest for our longing and wandering hearts.

In the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Amen.
