Prayers for the beginning of a new semester

Our Father in Heaven,

At the beginning of a new semester create in us a new desire, a new curiosity, and a new love for you and for the truth that we find through observation, study, and learning in this college community together.

Grant O Lord, that as students we might have courage and resolve in the hours and days of this semester to open ourselves to new perspectives, new ways of seeing, and new ways of understanding how all things find life and fulfillment in you. Grant that as you have given your best for us, that we may give our best in reading, in writing, in conversations, and in exploring in the many ways you have created us to learn.   May all learning lead us to be better people, loving and caring people, better prepared to serve you in the world.

Grant O Lord, that our faculty might have courage to serve as guides as we explore and learn and are challenged by new ideas and perspectives.   Give them strength and resolve in head, heart and hands to call all the best in us as students and all together in this campus community.

Grant O Lord, that all our staff, in every department and role, might have courage and resolve to serve you and your people with love, excellence, and goodness.   May our work always be work unto the Lord, in the joyous tasks and in those that make us feel challenged.

Teach us in the community to show love to one another, grace to all, and the fruit of the Spirit in every conversation, every meeting, every meal, and every interaction.   Give us the heart and mind to pray and support one another as we give this semester to you for your glory and purposes.

In the name of the Father, Jesus Christ the son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

All:           Your steadfast love O Lord is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the clouds.

Leader 2: For us, the seasons of life come and go, but through Jesus Christ your Son, your love and faithfulness are shown to be sure through all generations.

All:           Your steadfast love O Lord is as high as the heavens; your faithfulness extends to the clouds.

Leader 3: Your Word, O Lord, speaks of faithfulness across all the times of our lives and so we entrust all our times to you.

All:           Because of your faithfulness we will stand firm in our faith with courage, hope, and love for all people.

Leader 4: There are times of rejoicing, laughter and dancing and times of weeping, grieving and sorrow.

All:           Because of your faithfulness we will stand firm in our faith with courage, hope, and love for all people.

Leader 1: There are times of strong faith, growth and fruitfulness and times of apathy, lack, and failure.

All:           Because of your faithfulness we will stand firm in our faith with courage, hope, and love for all people.

Leader 2: There are times of new beginnings, freshman years and new commitments; there are times we need to endure and stay focused, senior years and times of completion.

Leader 1: There are times of national pride, joy, and confidence that a people have followed in your ways; yet there are times of discouragement, frustration, and disillusionment with a nation that denies God and seeks life from its idols that cannot provide.

All:           Because of your faithfulness we will stand firm in our faith with courage, hope, and love for all people.

Leader 2: There are times of joy, peace, and harmony in our families and in all our relationships, and times of brokenness, woundedness, and needed repair.

Prayer for the children amongst us

Jesus, in your words and in your actions in the Gospels, you show that you love the children, though many saw them as only an annoyance.   As you blessed the children so many years ago reach down in our day and bless the children.  Hold the children who are brought to adoption agencies and the foster care system into your loving and protective arms.  Protect the innocence of all children.  Come alongside of all children who feel alone, insecure, unwanted, or unloved and bring them into the light of your love and goodness, that they may know You as their refuge and strength and find family in Your church and among Christians. Amen.

Dependent

God,

I am dependent.  Dependent on You, dependent on others, dependent on creation.

Even the IRS knows about “dependents.”  Those people who cannot or do not live on their own, those people who need help with a place to live, food to eat, provisions for life which they cannot secure for themselves.  There are many dependents, we are all dependents. I am a dependent.  I am dependent on You, O Lord.

I cannot live on my own. I cannot provide for all I need.  I cannot anticipate all that might come my way.

I cannot resist temptations. I cannot love as I ought. I cannot always behave rightly and not behave badly.

I cannot control everything.  I cannot control emotions. I cannot control myself.

I cannot save myself. I cannot change my ways alone. I cannot live like You.

In the midst of all “I cannot,” I am forced to recognize what has always been true of humanity since Adam and Eve, what we seem unable or unwilling to admit and embrace.

I am dependent O Lord!  I am dependent on You, dependent on others, and dependent on your graciousness in creation.

Lord Jesus, provide for all who are dependent on You. Amen.

Let everything that has breath praise the Lord!

Lord God, I have read it and heard it so many times.  As a worship leader I have chosen Psalm 150 for a call to worship.

“Let everything,  everything that has breath”

Perhaps it is the “thing” that distracted me, thinking of only things like trees and stones, like lions and alligators, you know lord, “things.”  But here at this time and this place* I see that everything with breath, means all people, and people of all different nations, tribes, and groups; people of all different status, personality, and persuasion.  We are all called to praise the Lord.  We are all called to praise You!

Yet, as worship leaders, and as a worship leader at a Christian College, varied and diverse in many different ways, how can worship services become the service and the praise of all the people.   Must we worship in diversity in diverse times and place forever?   How can we who have breath, breathe in the Holy Spirit and give breath to our praise in ways that join our praise together.

Forgive me and forgive us for self-centered needs, ideas, and whims that divide our breath from you into seperate breaths. Grant that we might acknowledge that each and everyone of us live by only the breath you breathe into us, and that Your breath deep inside us seeks to breathe out your praise with every other person the breath that exclaims, “Praise the Lord.” Teach us your ways O Lord!  Amen.

*Prayer on my heart in response to our 1st session at the Calvin College worship symposium and NetVUE Conference in Grand Rapids, MI

“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
