“Armor of God” Responsive Prayer: Ephesians 6:10-17

Pastor/Leader/One: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Know that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Yes, put on the full armor of God then, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Stand firm, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Amen.

People/All: Amen.

“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

PRAYING THE SCRIPTURES: John 4:1-42

Lord Jesus, as you met with the woman at the well many years ago, so meet with us at this place, in this time here today.  Speak into our lives and cause us to hear your word of truth that brings us true life.

Break through our doubts, our fears, and our resistance to you and transform our lives that we might worship you in Spirit and in truth. Amen.

*This prayer was used in worship to prepare for a message on this passage from John entitled, “What is Worship?”  The message shared from the conversation with Jesus and the Samaritan Woman that real worship:  Begins with God (4:7-8), reveals the life the God offers us through Jesus Christ (4:10-15), reveals the truth about us (4:16-18), demands a response from us (4:19-26 – often our fear, avoidance or denial), and finally, real worship leads to a changed life that points others to Jesus (4:27-30, 39-42).

Fragile, Broken, Pieces

Fragile.

Sometimes I feel so fragile Father, as if I am one of those pieces of glassware mother never allowed us to play with or get near or touch.  Fragile, so easy to slip, to fall, to break. Fragile from the hand to the floor where I break into a thousand pieces.

Broken.

Sometimes I feel so broken Father, as if the slip and the fall are all that are in my past, all that define me, all that I have to claim as who I am.  Broken. Shattered. Smashed against the hardness of the surfaces that I can no longer bounce from. Far from the hands from which I slipped and fell. Far from the soft and gentle touch that created, shaped, and held. Broken. Pieces.

Pieces.

Sometimes I feel so disjointed, so fragmented, so divided; like so many pieces. Like the stories I heard as a child, of the egg that fell off the wall.  And sometimes it seems Father, that there is no way to even think about getting back on the wall, because there are so many pieces to gather, to repair, to mend with no hands, no glue, no way to put me all back together again.

Fragile, Broken, Pieces.

But then you Father, are the Potter.  Help me trust in your hands. To bring together fragile, broken pieces to hold in Your hands, never to be so fragile and broken and pieced up again.

A short prayer for a friend in need

Lord, have mercy.

Give strength where strength is needed,

peace in the midst of storm,

and rest for all who love well and serve from an open and honest heart.

Lament of the Hem Graspers – Matthew 14:36 (NKJV)

They begged Him that they might only touch the hem of His garment. And as many as touched it were made perfectly well.”
– Matthew 14:36 (NKJV)

How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?

Have I not begged?  Have I not stretched out my hand to grab hold of the hem of Your garment?

Yet “perfectly well” I do not know.

Has not the woman who released her daughter to You, begged for her safety as she entrusted a life to your care? Has she not grasped to the hem of your garment as she prayed for her child?

Yet, her child is dead. Lost to her for good, in what feeble humanity can only call an accident.

How long, O Lord? Will You forget us forever?
How long will You hide Your face from us?

Has not the fifty-year old man, with a wife and three young daughters, who tried everything to fight cancer; has he not begged and stretched our his hand to touch the hem and find life?

Yet, wellness is not to be found.

How long, O Lord? Will You forget us forever?
How long will You hide Your face from us?

Has not the one with a failing marriage, the battle trodden addict, the poor starving dead, the weak and oppressed suffering the abuses of power, war, and inequity, have they failed to beg enough, strive enough, hold enough, grasp enough for Your attention, Your touch, and Your word.

How long, O Lord? Will You forget us forever?
How long will You hide Your face from us?

In grasping for the hem, with you leave us hemmed in? In longing for the fringe, will you leave us on the fringe?

Now O Lord, turn you head and see those who reach for the hem of Your garment, Turn and see, give them Your full attention. Speak your words of life and of hope, “Take heart, your faith has made you well.”

How long, O Lord? Will You forget me forever?
How long will You hide Your face from me?

I beg, I strive, with all who grasp to the hem of Your garment.

“The Lord is my shepherd” – Psalm 23

O God, Your Word tells us that You are a shepherd to Your people.

Shepherd me and help lead me to a place of deep satisfaction and contentment in you.  You are all I need.

Green pastures and quiet waters sound so wonderful;  restore my soul O God and guide me in Your way.

O God, Your Word tells us that though we experience loss and death you are a shepherd to your people.

Shepherd me and comfort me with Your presence in the midst of dark valleys, fears and doubts.

O God, Your Word tells us the You provide and protect Your people.

Shepherd me with provision and protection that my life and faith may overflow.

O God, Your Word tells us goodness, love, and mercy are with Your people throughout life and forever.

Shepherd me that in Your goodness, love, and mercy I might live with You forever.

In the name of Christ, the Great Shepherd of the sheep, I pray. Amen

Contemporary Prayers based on Psalm 113

O Heavenly Father, You have shown us your great and deep love for us in Jesus Christ your son.  And because of your great love for us we today join with your people throughout many generations and praise the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.  Let the name of the Lord be praised today, throughout all the earth.  From the rising of the sun till it’s setting, both now and throughout all eternity, may the name of the Lord be praised.

As we come to you today, there are many things the occupy our minds and make our hearts anxious, but you are on the Throne over all the earth, and we know that you are not worried about the future, you are not anxiously fretting as are we, you are the mighty God and you have all things in your hands, nothing escapes your sight.   Yet in your majesty, you stoop to our weakness and care for all of us whom you have made.

You raise the poor from the dust and lift the needy from ashes; O Lord, hear us as we pray today, for some of us are among the poor and needy.

  • Some of us are poor in health and we need your strength, your comfort, your healing touch, that we will be well again and give praise to You.
  • Some of us are poor in our spiritual life – we have been running from you and your call upon our lives, we need your forgiveness and a second chance, another chance to come and walk in your way.
  • Some of us are poor in our hearts, our attitudes are not good and we are taking it out on people around us; touch us and bring us to our senses that we might truly live for you.
  • Some of us have financial need or need for employment. Lord, hear our prayers.
  • Some of us are needy because of a great loss in our lives, the loss of a loved one, the loss of a job, the loss of a friend. God heal our hearts; help us to grieve as people with hope.  Save us from despair and cause us to turn to you and praise you again.

Hear also our prayers for our families and homes. Hear the prayers of young people praying for their parents to come to know you and to live godly lives.  Hear the prayers of parents praying for their children; those who pray for the young children to grow in the knowledge of Christ and walk in His ways and those who are praying for their adult children who have wandered from you and your love and need to rediscover your mercy and grace.

Hear us O Lord; hear our prayers of petition this day.  Hear our praises we lift you alone!
