Morning Prayers for College Chapel

Let us pray together,

Eternal God, Father of us all, we give thanks to You this day for the lives that you have given us. As we gather as a college community:

  •  We are aware that our lives have been touched with joy, for these joys may we offer sincere gratitude.
  • We are aware that our lives have been touched with friends and family, for each of them we give thanks and pray that your mercies and goodness attend them.
  • We are aware that our lives have been touched with stresses and pains, as we face them, may no adversity lead us to despair, but instead in all of our struggles may we find your grace is sufficient and your love bountiful.
  • We are aware that our lives have been touched with Your loving presence. May we together share in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit and express Your love to one another in all our interactions.

God of all wisdom and knowledge, we acknowledge You as the source of all truth.   As we gather in this special community we share some things in common:

  • We share a hunger and thirst to know your truth and to apply your truth in the diversity of areas and academic disciplines represented in this community.
  • We share a desire to apply ourselves and give our best to our vocation as students, teachers, and life time learners.

Make our study and learning to be meaningful and profitable for the living of Your purposes in our lives. May our research and our questions lead us ever closer to You and to Your ways as we live for Your glory.

God and Savior of the whole world, who revealed your love and salvation in Jesus Christ, your only Son, let the witness of our college to the Christian Faith be strong in both our community and the world. As an institution and as individual members of this community may we reflect Your image and character in all of our words and actions.

Hear our prayers in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who taught us to pray together,

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, In earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, And forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the Kingdom, and the Power, and the Glory forever.  Amen.

Prayer for Chapel Worship – (Psalm 139)

Lord, you have examined us and know all about us. You know when we sit down and when we get up. You know our thoughts before we think them. You know where we go and where we lie down.

You know everything we do. Lord, even before we say a word, you already know it.

You are all around us—in front and in back—and have put your hand on us. Where can we go to get away from your Spirit? Where can we run from you? If we go up to the heavens, you are there. If we lie down in the grave, you are there. If we rise with the sun in the east and settle in the west beyond the sea, even there you would guide us.

If we walk through the campus, settle in a classroom, rest in our dorm rooms, or hang in the library, Lord you are there.

As we travel home and back, to clinical or sporting events, on campus and off, Lord you are there. On the soccer field, the lacrosse field, on the court and off, your right hand holds us. In the counseling center, in the dining hall and here in chapel, you, Lord, are always near.

So God, our loving Father, revealed to us fully in Jesus Christ, our Lord:

Examine us and know our hearts; test us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any unhealthy, offensive, sinful way in us and lead us in the way everlasting.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

Running

Running away from all of the questions

looking for someway to limit their power

Running toward things that distract from the questions

that keep me away from the pain of my doubts

Running away from all of the questions

give me a “pill” that will make me feel good!

Feeling a thrill, with a mindless abandon

to all that would keep all the questions in play

But, questions, like geysers, erupt with great force

running from questions just delays such outbursts

What’s to be gained through this running from questions?

In questions, it’s true, “Where there’s no pain, no gain.”

Running away from all of life’s questions

questions revealing something deep from within

In quieting, stillness, addressing the questions

only there, I can find out who I am, to be.

PRAYING THE SCRIPTURES: John 4:1-42

Lord Jesus, as you met with the woman at the well many years ago, so meet with us at this place, in this time here today.  Speak into our lives and cause us to hear your word of truth that brings us true life.

Break through our doubts, our fears, and our resistance to you and transform our lives that we might worship you in Spirit and in truth. Amen.

*This prayer was used in worship to prepare for a message on this passage from John entitled, “What is Worship?”  The message shared from the conversation with Jesus and the Samaritan Woman that real worship:  Begins with God (4:7-8), reveals the life the God offers us through Jesus Christ (4:10-15), reveals the truth about us (4:16-18), demands a response from us (4:19-26 – often our fear, avoidance or denial), and finally, real worship leads to a changed life that points others to Jesus (4:27-30, 39-42).

Confession and Longing after God – (Psalm 139 and 1 John 2:15-17)

Our Father in Heaven, Creator and Sustainer of all that you have made, Savior and Redeemer of our lives; as we have gathered for worship today we have affirmed our joy in your presence and your salvation. We have been reminded through the Psalm (139), that we can go nowhere in which we are not in your presence, we can never take in all that you are and how great your thoughts and your mercies toward us, and we can always trust in you as Creator, Sustainer, and Redeemer of our lives. For all of this we give you thanks and pray that our gratitude would grow and show in the way we live our lives every day.

And yet Father, we are challenged by your Word that calls upon us, “Do not love the world or anything in the world…”   We confess this morning, that each and every one of us have not loved you perfectly. We look around and see things in this world that we want. We have craved worldly and sinful things. We have lusted after things that appeal to our eyes. We have boasted about our own abilities and centered our lives upon ourselves in pride. We pray that you will lead us again to the truth, that the world and its desires pass away; that only those who do your will find life and life eternal.

So this morning Father, whatever has caught our eyes, whatever has captured our attention, whatever has led us away from you, we confess our shortcomings and sin, and pray that you will recreate us anew, that you will save us and redeem us from our sin, in thought and in deed, and empower us to live lives that are holy and pure, lives that conform to your will, through the power of Jesus Christ in his resurrection.   Lead us, transform us, and empower us to live a new life in Christ. In the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Prayer of God’s People for Holy Week

Lord, we need you…we sing those words this morning, and these words are so true…

In You, Lord, we find rest.

In You, we find guidance.

In You, we find grace that runs deeper than our sin and holiness that flows from being in Christ.

In You, we find strength in times of temptation and hope in times of trials and discouragement.

Lord, indeed we need you every hour.

We pray, this day, that we may trust in You, as our Heavenly Father, even as did Jesus Christ, in the Garden of Gethsemane.

We pray that we might not fall into temptation as we face the challenges and sufferings of life.

We pray that we will not be found sleeping in our lives, inattentive to the work of Your Kingdom, nor insensitive to the needs of all those whom You love.

We pray that we might be endowed with the power of the Holy Spirit so that we, like Jesus, might commit ourselves to You, seeking not our will, but Yours above all.

We pray, as did our Lord in Gethsemane, not simply for our own needs, but for the needs of those whom we love and who are close to us: people here at Roberts, family and friends.   We pray also for the world, that all will know You and the goodness of Your Kingdom’s rule.

Lord, we need you every hour.

May our love and devotion be strengthened as we encounter the Gospel of Jesus Christ, throughout our celebration of Holy Week and Easter. May Your Church be faithful in the proclamation of Your Gospel in all places, that Your name might be glorified in all the earth.

We pray these things in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.
