Deliver me from the god of the stomach

I have told you these things many times before. Now I tell you again with tears in my eyes. Many people live like enemies of the cross of Christ.  The only thing they have coming to them is death. Their stomach is their god. They brag about what they should be ashamed of. They think only about earthly things.  But we are citizens of heaven. And we can hardly wait for a Savior from there. He is the Lord Jesus Christ.

– Philippians 3:18-20

Deliver me O Father, from the god of the stomach.

It is easy to consider myself in the good group, the friend of Jesus and his cross. It is easy to point a finger at the woman over there, the guy at the office, and the many others who do not seek You, who feed their physical appetites 24/7, who brag about their sin, and who think only about earthly things.  But I am with you God.

Until I get honest, until I get really honest and admit to myself and confess to You that much of my life, in thought and in action, is about feeding the god of my stomach.  I want that which satisfies, that which taste good, that which makes my body feel comfortable and good. I am among those who don’t seek You, who excuse my sin and brag about my pleasures when You call me to a different life.   I am among those who think a great deal about earthly things. I am among those who think that heavenly things are far off, a reward for my “better than others life” at the end of my pleasures in this life.

I confess then O God, to myself and to You:

I serve the god of my stomach, of my physical and bodily desires and in so doing I do not always serve You and Your eternal purposes in the world.

I seek, not just Your will, so that I may live for you, but my pleasures so that I might enjoy my life.

My mind is most often on controlling life to make me feel some comfort, some joy, some enjoyment of heart and mind.  Even in my practices of faith, I choose to worship my way, with my music, with my tastes always ruling over what I will devour.

Lord Jesus, forgive me then:

for the times I am ungrateful, demanding a little more salt, a dash more of pepper, a little different taste to satisfy the palate and the stomach while many go with little or nothing.

for the pleasures I seek, I engage in, and thrive on, believing there is life to be found among the things that lead to death.

for the need to control, to have my needs met my way, and for how this often shapes my prayers and worship.

Hear my prayer, O Holy Spirit and deliver me from the god of my stomach so that I my be among the citizens of heaven, who can hardly wait for the Savior, who is the Lord Jesus Christ.

A prayer of response to the preaching of the Gospel

Heavenly Father, hear our prayers as we respond to your Word today:

Grant that we might reach out to you in faith like the woman in the Gospel who reached for your garment to be healed.

Grant that we exercise our faith by offering our all like the boy who gave the fish and bread and the widow who gave her last coin.

Grant that we might get out of our comfort zones like Peter who got out of the boat and walked to you on the water.

Grant, Lord Jesus that we might not be like the Pharisees who rejected you and your ways and fought against you.

Grant that we might not hold on to other loves and idols in our lives like the rich young ruler did.

Grant that we might be like the disciples who waited on your Holy Spirit and experienced your peace and your power to serve your purposes.

Grant that we might be like all those who received you and those whom you lovingly and joyful call your children.

Grant that we might always live as those who respond positively to your grace and are being transformed to your likeness

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for Chapel Worship – (Psalm 139)

Lord, you have examined us and know all about us. You know when we sit down and when we get up. You know our thoughts before we think them. You know where we go and where we lie down.

You know everything we do. Lord, even before we say a word, you already know it.

You are all around us—in front and in back—and have put your hand on us. Where can we go to get away from your Spirit? Where can we run from you? If we go up to the heavens, you are there. If we lie down in the grave, you are there. If we rise with the sun in the east and settle in the west beyond the sea, even there you would guide us.

If we walk through the campus, settle in a classroom, rest in our dorm rooms, or hang in the library, Lord you are there.

As we travel home and back, to clinical or sporting events, on campus and off, Lord you are there. On the soccer field, the lacrosse field, on the court and off, your right hand holds us. In the counseling center, in the dining hall and here in chapel, you, Lord, are always near.

So God, our loving Father, revealed to us fully in Jesus Christ, our Lord:

Examine us and know our hearts; test us and know our anxious thoughts. See if there is any unhealthy, offensive, sinful way in us and lead us in the way everlasting.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord we pray. Amen.

“Armor of God” Responsive Prayer: Ephesians 6:10-17

Pastor/Leader/One: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Know that our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Yes, put on the full armor of God then, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Stand firm, with the belt of truth buckled round your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.

People/All: We will put on the full armor of God, so that we can stand against the devil’s schemes.

Pastor/Leader/One: Be strong in the Lord and in his mighty power. Amen.

People/All: Amen.

“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.
