Dependent

God,

I am dependent.  Dependent on You, dependent on others, dependent on creation.

Even the IRS knows about “dependents.”  Those people who cannot or do not live on their own, those people who need help with a place to live, food to eat, provisions for life which they cannot secure for themselves.  There are many dependents, we are all dependents. I am a dependent.  I am dependent on You, O Lord.

I cannot live on my own. I cannot provide for all I need.  I cannot anticipate all that might come my way.

I cannot resist temptations. I cannot love as I ought. I cannot always behave rightly and not behave badly.

I cannot control everything.  I cannot control emotions. I cannot control myself.

I cannot save myself. I cannot change my ways alone. I cannot live like You.

In the midst of all “I cannot,” I am forced to recognize what has always been true of humanity since Adam and Eve, what we seem unable or unwilling to admit and embrace.

I am dependent O Lord!  I am dependent on You, dependent on others, and dependent on your graciousness in creation.

Lord Jesus, provide for all who are dependent on You. Amen.

“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Mother’s Day Prayer

Our Heavenly Father, giver of all good gifts, we give thanks to you this day for your gift of mothers.  We thank you for our mothers, we thank you for all mothers, and we thank you for those women in our lives who are not are mothers, yet in spirit and in action reach out and care for us as a mother would. We thank you for mothers who have been an example to us of the Christians Faith, those who are led by the Spirit of God in their lives.

Grant that we might be more appreciative of all that mothers do for us.  Grant that we might speak words of thanks and love more often and words of complaint much less.

For the mothers of our lives we pray your blessings of peace and joy; strengthen them in faith, in hope, and in love.  Encourage them in days when they feel overwhelmed with the many tasks and problems of life.  Encourage them when they feel insecure, insufficient for the job, like they have failed.  Lift their eyes beyond the moments of a particular day and help them to see the big picture of mothering along with the successes that are theirs in raising and caring for us their children and their families, as well as those who they have influenced beyond their own families.

  •  Father, we pray for those whose mothers have finished  life’s course. Comfort all who grieve the loss of their mother’s this day.
  • We pray for mothers today, who have lost a child, knowing that a day like mother’s day can open the wounds of grief and pain as they are reminded.  We pray for the many mothers of this country and the world who mourn today, because they have lost a son or daughter in the battles and fighting of war.  Bring your strength, comfort, and      assurances to those who need you today due to such a great loss.
  • For those women who desire greatly to be mothers, but  have not been able to bear children, grant them your peace and grace that they may discover your goodness and joy in their lives.
  • We pray for any who have never known their birth mothers.  Grant them peace in the unknown things of life and grant that they might take joy in those who have been mothers to them in spirit and in action.
  • We pray for those mothers we know who have yet to accept your salvation, may their hearts be opened unto you.
  • For any who have tensions and struggles in their relationship with their mothers, grant this day to be an opportunity for new life and reconciliation.  May love conquer a multitude of sins, may love bring new life.

Father, we know that none can live out a godly and righteous life without you, so pour out your Holy Spirit upon our mothers and all women who seek to serve you in love.  May their lives find satisfaction and deep joy in serving you and your purposes in this world.

We worship you and honor you today O Lord, thanking you for your beautiful and holy design of motherhood and its impact on our lives. Father, you are the giver of all gifts.  Today we thank you for our mothers, bless them today and always through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer for “grace speech”

“Let no evil talk come out of your mouths, but only what is useful for building up, as there is need, so that you words may give grace to those who hear.  And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with which you were marked with a seal for the day of redemption.  Put away from you all bitterness and wrath and anger and wrangling and slander, together with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God in Christ, has forgiven you.” – Ephesians 4:29-32 (NRSV)

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord, our God.

Let no evil talk come from our mouths, but only what is useful for building up others, only what they really need to recieve Your grace.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord, our God.

Create in us a heart that issues forth in grace speech.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord.

Let our speech bring grace to all people and never grieve your Holy Spirit.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord, and renew a right spirit in us.

Create in us a clean heart:  free from bitterness, wrath and anger; free from grumbling, complaining, and ill-will toward one another.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord, and renew our speech.

Create in us a clean heart; a kind heart, a tender heart, a forgiving heart.

Create in us a clean heart, O Lord, and let our heart be a well flowing with fresh and life-giving “grace speech.”

      Amen.

A Prayer for Individual and Communal Healing

Mighty Creator, Loving Father, Compassionate Healer; we come to you this day as a congregation of your people.  We come to you as a sign of our dependence upon you and our faith in you as our God, our Redeemer and our Healer.

As we come to you, we are thankful that we are not alone in this world with our hurts and our wounds.  Grant us O God, strength to face the hurts of our past lives.  May our sufferings cause us, not to despair, but to look toward you and to see your movements of grace and care for us.  We pray for each and everyone here this morning, that in this gathered time,

there may be healing begun,

healing continued or

healing strengthened.

We pray not just for ourselves this morning, but also for the many hurts and sufferings of people and people groups that have left deep wounds and fractured lives and relationships.   Where we have hurt others in our words and actions, forgive us O God.   Where we have sinned against others through action or inaction, forgive us and make us to be a people who show love and work for justice in all places, among all peoples.

As we come to you this day O God, we do not have all the answers. We often feel powerless to solve problems and bring healing in our own lives or in our cities, our county and our world.   So hear us, Gracious Father, as we pray that we might know and feel your healing touch both in our individual lives, our families, our cities, and our world.  Grant that we may join you in your healing work in the lives of those around us and throughout the world.

May your kingdom come and your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.  We pray this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

“A Morning Prayer”

Lord,

My heart’s desire is to be used up for you, to be poured out in a life of love for others.

Yet, I find there is another desire working in me.  I know it to be misguided, I know that it is not Christian. It is a desire to have people love me, for them to acknowledge my wonderfulness and be impressed with me.  I cry out for my needs to be met. “Give to me,” I say to the world and the people around me.

And yet, I know of another way in Christ.  A way that calls me to “Give away” my life; a way that calls me to love God and others and not just self. It is a way that says giving and thanksgiving is a better path.

O Lord, Heavenly Father, give grace to your child this day; grant mercy and strength and all that is needed to live a life with and for you, so that I might be a grace to another.

Amen

“Help, O God!” (Prayers from Psalm 121)

O God, help us.  Help!  We all need help in our lives Lord.  There is not one of us who does not need your help.  Yet often in our pride and arrogance, sometimes in our confusion or doubt, sometimes in ignorance or sinful desire, we seek help from others; other places, other people, other things.

O God, we will lift up our eyes to our money and possessions, to people in powerful positions, to those who have all the answers, to physical strength and military might.  No, not to these, for where does our help come from?  Our help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven and earth.

Forgive us for the times we turn to other things to give us courage, to give us hope, to give us freedom, to meet our needs.  Teach us O Lord, again and again to turn to You, for only in you do we find true and satisfying help.

You promise O Lord you will watch over us. Us as a people, we as individuals.  You promise you will watch over us and never sleep.

You promise your will guard us from harm.  Us as a people, we as individuals. Both night and day you will keep us.

You promise to watch over us.  Us as a people, we as individuals.  You promise to watch over our lives in all our comings and goings.

We pray this morning, heavenly Father, that you will watch and keep us as you promise.  That in all of our need for help, no matter what it, you will cause us to turn to You – our helper.

Hear our prayers this morning for our own personal needs Lord.  For ____________ and __________ and __________…

We pray this morning, heavenly Father, not just for ourselves but for our family, friends, for Christians throughout this world serving you, for those yet to know you as Lord and Savior; for these hear our prayers this morning.

And now, O Lord, may we be ever reminded that our help comes from You, the Maker of Heaven and earth.  And may we ever turn to you, who has said to us “Come unto me…and I will give you rest”.

May all glory and honor be to you, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, in whom we trust our lives.  Amen
