“Lord Have Mercy”

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have done things that You have told us not to do.

We have neglected your word, chosen our ways over Yours and chosen to serve our own self-centered goals and interests,

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even made You out to be a demanding, grumpy judge scrutinizing our every move to catch us as law-breakers, instead of receiving Your commands as loving truth and guidance to live as we were fully intended to live.

We have sinned most profoundly in believing and acting in ways that blatantly claim that You cannot be trusted to care for us and that we must take care of ourselves and find our own way to satisfying and fulfilling life.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has failed to be obedient to Your will and ways. In both our thoughts and actions we have neglected to do those things that You have told us to do.

We have neglected your word and that which is closet to Your heart and given priority and preference to our own concerns, our own success, and our own prosperity and happiness.

We have justified our actions in our own minds and even convinced ourselves that You exist to assure our success and happiness from day to day.

Because of all of this we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Have mercy, for each and everyone of us has needs that we cannot supply and meet on our own.  Whether physical, emotional, spiritual, financial, or relational, each of us find ourselves needy.  Together we stand as a needy bunch. Despite all our efforts to fix things, earn things, work things out, think on things and act on things to produce what we think would be best, often we find ourselves insufficient for the tasks, confused about direction, frightened by our circumstances, unsure of our future.

There are decisions we are afraid to make, people we find hard to love, relationships we wish were different, service we wish we could engage in, love we wish we could offer, differences we wish we could make.

Because this is true of us we need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Not simply me and my needs, but in Your great lovingkindness and compassion, look upon the needs of all who cry out to You today.

Grant strength to all who need strength, deliverance to those who need deliverance, forgiveness to those who repent and turn to you, health to those who need healing, comfort to those who grieve, Your presence to all who seek You.

All of us need Your mercy, so Lord Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

In the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Amen.

Joy to the World: A Christmas Prayer

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

Father, forgive our foolishness and stubbornness in seeking joy in all the wrong places.

We look for joy in riches, we look for joy in parties and celebrations, we look for joy in successes.

We look for joy in drinks and drugs, in sex, in the victory of sports, in buying and selling, in spiritual experiences that comfort and excite.

Guide us to true Joy, that can only come from You; joy that comes into the world and invites us to receive You as King.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!

Reign in my life, reign in our lives, reign on earth, as it is in heaven, that all Your creation will take joy in You and Your salvation offered to all through Jesus Christ, Your Son. May we truly glorify and enjoy You forever.

No more let sins and sorrows grow…

Replace our anxieties and fears with joyful trust in You and let the latent distrust that leads to sin be conquered through the love of Your reigning Lordship in our lives and in the world.

Replace our sorrows and mourning with praise and gratitude for Your constant Presence, strength and comfort.

He rules the world with truth and grace…

We give thanks O God, that You rule the world.

We give thanks O God, that You rule with truth and that You lead us to the truth that sets us free.

We give thanks O God, that You rule with grace and that we are led by Your love and goodness that we do not deserve and cannot earn.

Amen.

Fragile, Broken, Pieces

Fragile.

Sometimes I feel so fragile Father, as if I am one of those pieces of glassware mother never allowed us to play with or get near or touch.  Fragile, so easy to slip, to fall, to break. Fragile from the hand to the floor where I break into a thousand pieces.

Broken.

Sometimes I feel so broken Father, as if the slip and the fall are all that are in my past, all that define me, all that I have to claim as who I am.  Broken. Shattered. Smashed against the hardness of the surfaces that I can no longer bounce from. Far from the hands from which I slipped and fell. Far from the soft and gentle touch that created, shaped, and held. Broken. Pieces.

Pieces.

Sometimes I feel so disjointed, so fragmented, so divided; like so many pieces. Like the stories I heard as a child, of the egg that fell off the wall.  And sometimes it seems Father, that there is no way to even think about getting back on the wall, because there are so many pieces to gather, to repair, to mend with no hands, no glue, no way to put me all back together again.

Fragile, Broken, Pieces.

But then you Father, are the Potter.  Help me trust in your hands. To bring together fragile, broken pieces to hold in Your hands, never to be so fragile and broken and pieced up again.

Nothing fancy Lord, just a simple prayer…

Nothing fancy Lord, just a simple prayer:

My dear friend Steve is dying; closer than anyone wants or can believe.

His family suffers to watch him suffer like this at the end.

Bring peace and comfort to his wife, his children, his family and friends,

and lead him safely into your loving arms and eternal presence.

Amen.

Gethsemane’s other prayers – Mark 14:32-42

Am I not among those who have walked with you all this time Lord?  There’s a faithful group of us, we’ve been serving, working, ministering, learning, preparing; you name it, we’ve been doing it.  All for you, Lord.  Right everyone?

“Even if I have to die with you, I will never disown you.” (And all God’s People said, “Amen and Amen!”)

“Sit here while I pray; stay here and keep watch.”

Oh Lord, we’ve been working so hard all day; pushing for the kingdom, serving with great joy…but I am so tired. Dear God, bless the children, and the families, and the work of the church, and the pastors, and everyone else I am too tired to remember.

“Are you asleep?  Could you not watch for one hour?  Watch and pray so that you will not fall into temptation”

“THE SPIRIT IS WILLING, BUT THE BODY IS WEAK”

Oh Lord, yes I am willing. I will fight with you, I will fight for you, I will stand with you to the end.  Don’t worry about me and temptation, I’ve been following pretty close now for a while Jesus. It’s all good…

Except, my eyes seem to fail me, the body is weak.  I need rest Lord. I’ve been working so hard, serving, preaching, going to meetings, feeding hundreds, setting up dinners and programs and studies and prayer times and… I am so tired. If I could just get a power nap for a few minutes, I would be good and back to service again.  Bless the children, and the families, and the work of the church, and the pas…

“Are you still sleeping and resting?  Enough! The hour has come…”

Have mercy O God, the spirit is willing, but my body is so weak.  “I don’t understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do.”  Have mercy O God!  Have mercy on me.  Have mercy on us all.

“Be our Rock”

Heavenly Father and Almighty God, we turn to you in the midst of our personal need and the great need of the world today.

Pay attention to us O Lord. Come quickly to help us.

Pay attention to our need for help in the midst of busy lives.

Pay attention to our need for health and strength in mind, body and spirit.

Pay attention to our need for deliverance from addictions, from discouragement, from troubling circumstances and tough situations

Pay attention to our need for forgiveness.

Pay attention to our prayers for others, close and far away,

For those who are hungry today

For those who are in slavery, in places of war, in abusive and hurtful places.

For those who need your deliverance

For those who need new life and hope in the midst of despair.

Come quickly to help, O Lord

Be the Rock that we go to for safety.  Be the strong fort that saves us.

From our laziness, from our busyness, from our abundance and our lack.

From our sin and its ill effects on those around us and from the results of others sin in our lives.

From temptations, from weather, from emotional distress and depression.

From all things which distract us from your love and your purposes for our lives.

Be our Rock O Lord.  And indeed you are our Rock and Our Fort.

Lead us this day and guide our way,

That we might walk truly in your way,

And so bring honor to your name.

In the strong name of Christ our Lord we pray.  Amen.
