Responsive Prayer for Pentecost Sunday

Heavenly Father, on this Pentecost Sunday we pray that your church may yield to your Holy Spirit in everything; that we will acknowledge the Lordship of Jesus Christ and keep in step with Your Spirit in life and service.

We pray this day for the renewal of the church, your church throughout the world.

Come Holy Spirit, renew your church:

  • We pray that we as your church may be unified, that all people may know the truth of the Gospel and come to receive your love and lordship.
  • We pray that we as your church may be holy, that by the transforming power of the Holy Spirit we might be people who take on the character of Jesus Christ, revealing the fruit of the Spirit (the fruit of the new life in Christ, with death to the fruit of our old self-driven lives).
  • We pray that we as your church will be faithful to the mission you have given us and that empowered by the Holy Spirit we will proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ to all people, everywhere we go.

We pray this day for the renewal of the earth, for all that you have made in love.

Come Holy Spirit, renew the earth in your creative power that we may know and see your grace and love displayed in all of creation, in the earth, the water, the resources, the beauty, created for your glory and our provision.

We pray this day for the renewal of human culture, for all dimensions of the lives of all peoples and all nations.

Come Holy Spirit, renew all human culture. Forgive and redeem the cultures of the world where we have strayed and lead us back to you:  for governments around the world that they may provide justice and protection and order, for businesses that they may provide meaningful employment and helpful services and goods, for fine arts and music to creatively lead our thoughts and minds toward you, our Creator.

We pray this day for Your forgiveness and restoration.

Come Holy Spirit, forgive and restore us:

  • forgive us for we have fractured your church,
  • we have wasted the resources of this earth and failed to see your hand in all that you have made,
  • we have corrupted our cultures in our sinful unbelief and evil practices.

Forgive us and restore us by the power of your Holy Spirit, and draw us to you as we worship you here and throughout the world. Be glorified in all the earth O Lord and Savior.  Amen.

Hear our prayer in the name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

A Congregational Responsive Reading of Psalm 46 – led by two voices

Reader 1:     God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Reader 2:     God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

All:              “Be still, and know that I am God!”

Reader 1:    Because God is our refuge and strength we will not fear, though the earth should change.

Reader 2:     Though the mountains shake in the heart of the sea;

Reader 1:     Though its waters roar and foam,

Reader 2:     Though the mountains tremble with it tumult.

All:              God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.

Reader 1:     There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the holy habitation of the Most High.

Reader 2:     God is in the midst of the city; it shall not be moved;

Reader 1:     God will help it when the morning dawns,

Reader 2:     The nations are in an uproar, the kingdoms totter; he utters his voice and the earth melts.

All:              The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge!

Reader 1:     Come, behold the works of the Lord; see what he has done.

Reader 2:     He makes wars cease to the end of the earth; he breaks the bow, and shatters the spear; and burns the shields with fire.

All:              “Be still, and know that I am God!”

Reader 1:     “I am exalted among the nations.”

Reader 2:     “I am exalted in the earth.”

All:             The Lord of hosts is with us; the God of Jacob is our refuge!

A Prayer for Building Dedication (Originally prepared for the opening of the Nursing and Science Center at Roberts Wesleyan College – Sept 2015)

Pastor/Leader (with direction): Please join me now in our Prayer of Dedication.  I will lead us in prayer through a number of petitions, each time I say, “we give this building to your work and purposes,”  let our congregational response be, “We dedicate this building to the Glory of God!.”

Pastor/Leader: Almighty God, our Lord and Savior:  We joyfully celebrate the completion of the ________________ (name the building).  We give thanks to all who have given of their resources, their gifts and their labors to make this building possible.  O Lord, with gratitude and thanksgiving we give this building to your work and purposes.

People:   “We dedicate this building to the Glory of God.”

Pastor/Leader:   You are the giver of all good gifts Lord. We believe that you have provided our community with this building and this resource to benefit this campus community and even more so, to fulfill your Kingdom’s purposes in this world. With gratitude and thanksgiving, we give this building to your work and purposes.

People: “We dedicate this building to the Glory of God.”

Pastor/Leader:   Lord, it has been said, “First we form our buildings and then our buildings form us.”  We pray that this building will be a place where lives are formed in mind, body, and spirit so that both those who teach and all those who learn here will become people who reflect your goodness, your excellence, and your compassion and love both here and everywhere they go. To this end O Lord, with gratitude and thanksgiving we give this building to your work and purposes.

People: “We dedicate this building to the Glory of God.”

Pastor/Leader:  In the name of the Father, and the Son and the Holy Spirit we pray.  Amen.
