A Prayer for Four Voices (adapted from Lorica of St. Patrick, ca. 377)

The prayer was prepared for a Chapel Worship Service at Roberts Wesleyan College on 10-23-13 in which our speaker, Billy Swann, from Dublin, Ireland spoke on “Faith Mountains Move” from Matthew 21:18-22.

Prayer Voice 1:        I arise today

Through a mighty strength, the invocation of the Trinity,

Through a belief in the Threeness,

Through confession of the Oneness Of the Creator of creation.

Prayer Voice 2:        I arise today

Through the strength of Christ’s birth and His baptism,

Through the strength of His crucifixion and His burial,

Through the strength of His resurrection and His ascension,

Prayer Voice 3:        I arise today

Through God’s strength to pilot me;

God’s might to uphold me, God’s wisdom to guide me,

God’s eye to look before me, God’s ear to hear me,

God’s word to speak for me, God’s hand to guard me,

God’s way to lie before me, God’s shield to protect me,

Prayer Voice 4:        God’s hosts to save me From snares of the devil,

From temptations of vices,

From every one who desires me ill,

Afar and anear, Alone or in a mulitude.

Prayer Voice 1:         Christ with me, Christ before me, Christ behind me,

Prayer Voice 2:         Christ in me, Christ beneath me, Christ above me,

Prayer Voice 3:         Christ on my right, Christ on my left,

Prayer Voice 4:         Christ when I lie down, Christ when I sit down,

Prayer Voice 1 & 3:   Christ in the heart of every man who thinks of me,

Prayer Voice 2 & 4:   Christ in the mouth of every man who speaks of me,

Prayer Voice 1 & 3:   Christ in the eye that sees me,

Prayer Voice 2 & 4:   Christ in the ear that hears me.

Prayer Voice 1:         We arise today

Prayer Voice 2:         Through a mighty strength,

Prayer Voice 3:         the invocation of the Trinity,

Prayer Voice 4:         Through a belief in the Threeness,

Prayer Voice 1:         Through a confession of the Oneness

Prayer Voice 2:         Of the Creator of creation

All Voices:                 Amen.

“May God bless all the earth” – A communal prayer based on Psalm 67

ONE:  Almighty and Merciful God, you have been gracious to us and blessed us in every way.

ALL:   Surely you have made your face to shine upon us.

ONE:   Forgive us for our limited view of your blessings; for hoarding and enjoying your mercies selfishly, with no concern to share with others.

ALL:   You have blessed us to share gracious with others, that your way may be known upon the earth.

ONE:   We pray that your saving power will be known among all nations.

ALL:   Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

ONE:   For you, O God, judge the peoples with equity and guide the nations upon earth.

ALL:   Let the peoples praise you, O God; let all the peoples praise you. Let the nations be glad and sing for joy,

ONE:   The earth has yielded its increase; You, O God have blessed us.

ALL:  May God continue to bless us; let all the ends of the earth honor him.

ONE:  May your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

ALL:  Amen.

I used to think…

I used to think I was quite capable, able to succeed at anything I set out to accomplish;

now, I often wonder if I am capable of anything that matters.

I used to think I was a servant; now, I often wonder if I simply serve my own interests and desires.

I used to think I was free; now, I often contemplate all the binds me.

I used to think I had many answers; now, I often marvel at the number of questions.

I used to think was strong; now, I often feel weak.

I used to think I was holy and just; now, I am often confronted with my sin and failures.

I used to think I trusted in God perfectly;

now, I see how often I act in fear and betray my unbelief.

I used to think that I was mature; now, I simply wonder if I will ever grow up.

I used to think that God is loving and present and active in His world; this I still believe. I pray that I might hold to Him and join Him in His creative, sustaining, loving action in the world.

Lord, hear my prayer.  Lord, have mercy!

.
